Information Design with Maps, Travel Guides, and Brochures
There was a time when paper brochures, pamphlets and maps were carefully designed, colored, and printed. The paper was thick and sturdy, it was made to last the length of a visit. They are works of art. The multitude of graphics and use of CMYK color separation are amazing. What we have printed now just doesn't compare. Often we rely on our phones to get us where we are going and we are missing out on so much.
CMYK - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key colors (key=Black) - a wet ink printing process was created in 1906 by the Eagle Printing Ink Co., during which it was discovered that these 4 colors could produce an almost unlimited amount of color variations when combined in various degrees of saturation. These posters, plans, and brochures below show the early CMYK process. You can see in each of them the four colors clearly expressed.
Brochures and pamphlets have been used as propaganda and marketing as far back of the mid 17th century.
That's over 450 years of advertising. How much has changed? And how little? This is a personal collection of my parents.
