WHEN
April - May 2019
It had been a life-long dream for Kaspar to take his sketchbook patterns, scale them up, and paint them in a public space... In August of 2018, when he was invited to paint a new pump track and skate park in Ningbo, China, (you can read about that here) Kaspar didn't realize that less than a year later he would return to paint over 220 meters (more than 700 feet) of wall. The owners of the Zicheng International School of Ningbo invited him, along with his wife Ali, to come back to China and paint custom murals on three separate walls. One street-facing, one along the kindergarten school, and one inside the newly designated music hall. With nearly all of our supplies sourced in China, a translating app, a prayer for good weather, and anywhere from 0-6 painters we worked non-stop for 4 weeks to complete these murals and document the process along the way.

The first wall was called The Endless Knot Wall, mutli-colored geometric lines ravel and unravel over 200 feet, ending in a tradition Chinese knot. This mural was created using laser-cut stencils, chalk, tape, and acrylic paint. The second wall, The Zodiac Animal Landscape, wrapped around the Kindergarten in alternating scenes of geometric ocean and land animals. This mural was created using tape, pencil, stencils, acrylic paint, and spray paint. Much of this wall was done free hand, using only a few small stencils. Our final mural, The Music Waves, was a visual representation of possible sound waves on a bass/alto/treble scale, it most represented the nature of Kaspar's sketchbook patterns. This mural was created using tape, pencil, acrylic paint, and patience.

Here you can read more about the production of these murals and see more of Kaspar's patterns. For an inquiries on custom murals please contact Kaspar Heinrici at Treibdesign.
